The native Crees of Northern Quebec
anguish over their decision to allow the Canadian government to
divert water enormous amounts of water from one of north America's
last untouched rivers. They capitulated, despite years of protest
over similar projects,
because of the promise of jobs.
"Nonetheless, environmental groups mounted a last-ditch effort to
stop the project, saying the diversion endangers the Rupert River
trout species, among the biggest in the world." Rheal Seguin in the

Miramichi Atlantic Salmon
Numbers Up
The number of Atlantic salmon in
the Miramichi this summer was
up 60% from the 2001 low,
according to this article by Fred LeBrun in the Albany, New
York, Times-Union. "The good news, prompting cautious
optimism, is since 2001 salmon numbers have slowly come back.
While July's splendid fishing on the Miramichi was due to a
greater number of spawners returning than in recent years, lots
of rain and a full river also contributed."
